A mild meteor shower peaks between November 4 through 7. During the Taurid shower, 5 to 10 meteors per hour are typically visible in a dark sky. Better viewing will happen with the Leonid shower, which will peak about a week later around November 14 with 15 to 20 meteors per hour.
The annual mussel quarantine restrictions were lifted last weekend on Halloween. The season is typically from May 1 through the end of October.
The dab of rain last weekend is a reminder that we approach the coho salmon and steelhead trout spawning season. "A heavy dose of rain is needed!" Typically, the annual cohort (group) is waiting in the saltwater and when a flush of fresh rainwater comes through the creeks, they move up the creek. The returning cohort was last seen in the winter of 2012–2013 when 32 redds were recorded in Olema Creek and 25 in Redwood Creek. Hopefully, the rain will arrive!
New artwork in the Bear Valley Visitor Center is titled "The Park is Life." Produced by the Latino Photo Project, the artwork is on display through December.
Lots of activity around the Bear Valley Visitor Center, which is currently being pressure washed and stained, followed by new flooring/carpeting going in. The flooring project will change access to the building to the back entrance. Watch for signs as the project progresses.
The Bear Valley Visitor Center will be open on Wednesday, November 11, Veterans Day, from 9 am to 4:30 pm (holiday hours). The Visitor Center now closes at 4:30 pm (winter hours) during the standard time period.
