Frequently Asked Questions About the Hiker Shuttle

Seating capacity on the Hiker Shuttle bus is limited and rider demand is high. In 2019, visitors interested in riding on the Hiker Shuttle experienced wait times from one to two hours to board a bus. The park is piloting park wide timed entry reservations and the Hiker Shuttle is included in that system.

Reservations improve the visitor experience by guaranteeing that everyone in your party will be able to board a specific bus at a specific time. They also help minimize congestion, crowding, and wait times.

Hiker Shuttle reservations are available first-come, first-served online at https://www.recreation.gov/timed-entry/10088647. You can also use the Recreation.gov mobile app or call 877-444-6777.

Reservations for Hiker Shuttle Tickets will be released on www.recreation.gov beginning at 8 a.m. MDT on May 1. During this first release window, reservations will be available for the dates of May 24 through June 30.

  • The next release will begin on June 1, at 8 a.m. MDT, for the month of July and any remaining days that have not been booked for June.
  • On July 1, reservations will be available for the month of August and any remaining days that have not been booked for July.
  • On August 1, reservations will be available for the month of September and any remaining days in August that have not been booked.
  • On September 1, reservations will be available for October and any remaining days in September that have not been booked.

Additional reservations for the Hiker Shuttle will be released at 7 p.m. MDT via Recreation.gov the night before a desired arrival date. For instance, if a visitor is planning a trip on June 3, additional reservations will be released via Recreation.gov beginning at 7 p.m. MDT on the night of June 2.

If there are five or more people in a party, a different person using a different Recreation.gov account will need to book a second reservation.

Yes. All park shuttle buses are accessible and can accommodate wheelchairs and most can accommodate scooters.

Of the stops available, Bear Lake and Sprague Lake offer the most accessible options.  Please note that these facilities do not meet accessibility standards for outdoor recreation sites. If you, or someone in your group, already has a America The Beautiful Interagency Annual, Senior, Access, Military, Veterans, 4th Grade, or Volunteer Pass, this pass will cover your park entrance fee (not the Recreation.gov processing fee for Hiker Shuttle reservations). A pass covers the individual park entrance fee for the passholder and up to 4 others.

A Hiker Shuttle reservation is also required. Reservations are only available at Recreation.gov. There is a $2 per processing fee, and this covers up to 4 Hiker Shuttle Tickets per reservation.

No. The number of Hiker Shuttle Tickets available is based on the number of seats located on the bus and reservations are non-refundable and non-transferrable.

Rider demand for the Hiker Shuttle is high. To ensure that all riders have a seat on the bus, they must board the bus that is specified on their reservation. For example, if you made a reservation for the 9 a.m. bus, but do not arrive until 11 a.m., you have missed your bus.

The last Hiker Shuttle bus of the day departs from RMNP's Park & Ride Transit Hub at 6 p.m. Shuttle riders are strongly advised to watch the time when exploring the park. Make sure that all members of your party return to the Park & Ride Transit Hub well before 6 p.m. The bus will not wait for you!

If someone misses the last bus of the day, there are no other buses or public transit available that provide service to Estes Park.
