Wilderness Designated Site Details

Due to rapidly changing conditions associated with the mountain pine beetle infestation and resulting dead trees that pose potential hazards, along with impacts from the 2020 wildfires, our requirements and regulations associated with campsites and camping are also changing rapidly. Contact the Wilderness Office (970-586-1242) for current conditions, regulations and requirements.

Wilderness Designated Site Regulations:

  1. Camp safely away from standing dead trees as near as is safely possible to the silver metal arrowhead that marks the site.
  2. Fires prohibited (use portable stoves only) unless permit states wood fire site and site has visible metal fire ring (use dead and down wood only).
  3. Party size is limited to 7 at individual sites and 12 at group sites.
  4. Due to excessive impact, groups over 7 persons must use group sites or split up and camp at least 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) apart.
  5. No more than 3 consecutive nights in 1 camp area.
  6. If the designated site has more than 4 inches (10 centimeters) of snow, follow the Wilderness Winter Camping guidelines.
