Size: 8-10”
Description: Males are glossy black with a purple iridescence on the head, greenish iridescence on the body and striking yellow eyes. Females are plainer brown and have dark eyes.
Migratory Status: Late spring and summer residents of Rocky Mountain National Park.
Habitat: Live in meadows, grasslands and riparian areas to 10,000 feet.
Diet: Forage on the ground and eat mostly seeds and grains, although they also eat insects and small mammals.
