    Alibates flint deposits were used by indigenous peoples of the Texas Panhandle for thousands of years. The flint deposits are within the Alibates Dolomite, a marine unit within the Permian red beds of the Texas panhandle.     Chickasaw National Recreation Area (NRA) preserves historic freshwater and mineral springs within a landscape of gently rolling hills and stream-cut ravines that are the erosional remnants of the Arkbuckle Mountains in Oklahoma.     Fort Davis National Historic Site contains one of the most intact examples of a post-Civil War frontier fort in the American Southwest. It is located in the Davis Mountains that were formed by volcanic activity over a three-million-year period that ended approximately 35 million years ago. The cliffs above the fort are made of the volcanic Sleeping Lion Formation display well-developed columnar jointing.

    Lake Meredith National Recreation Area is situated within a surprising section of canyon landscape below the Caprock Escarpment on the otherwise mostly flat High Plains of Texas.     Lyndon B. Johnson NHP is in the Pedernales River valley in the Hill Country of Texas, a relatively rugged landscape of hills with granitic or carbonate bedrock and characterized by shallow soils.
