Horseback Riding

Horses and their riders are welcome at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site!

Please read below for information about horseback riding within the park, including rules and regulations designed for visitor safety and resource protection.

Horses may be ridden or used only in the following designated areas:

  • Along the shoulder of paved roads open to motor vehicles
  • The Freedom Trail
  • All other areas are prohibited.

Additionally, please be aware of the following rules and regulations:

  • Horse excrement, hay, straw, and/or bedding materials must be removed from all parking/staging areas.
  • All equine users upon request must provide proof of a negative Coggins test or similar Equine Infectious Anemia test performed within the last 12 months.
