Following multiple days of snow and ice removal from park roads and sidewalks, National Park Service visitor facilities at Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, and Wright Brothers National Memorial will reopen at normal times on Friday, Jan. 24. Temperatures are expected to rise above freezing on Friday; however, visitors should use caution while driving and walking through the parks, particularly during the colder morning hours. National Park Service visitor facilities at Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site (Fort Raleigh) and Wright Brothers National Memorial will remain closed Thursday, Jan. 23. Fort Raleigh’s shoreline erosion public meeting, originally scheduled for Jan. 23, is postponed—a new date will be announced in the coming days. Ahead of an impending winter storm, National Park Service visitor facilities at Cape Hatteras National Seashore (Seashore), Fort Raleigh National Historic Site (Fort Raleigh) and Wright Brothers National Memorial will close at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21 and remain closed Wednesday, Jan. 22. Outdoor areas at the Seashore and Fort Raleigh will remain open.  Fort Raleigh National Historic Site invites public comments on three preliminary alternatives for stabilizing approximately one mile of its shoreline. Public comment on the preliminary alternatives is open from Jan. 8-Feb. 21, 2025.  Fort Raleigh National Historic Site (Fort Raleigh) and the Dare County Trails Commission will celebrate National Trails Day, June 1, 2024, by unveiling newly installed educational exhibits along Fort Raleigh’s Freedom Trail.  National Park Service law enforcement rangers responded this morning to a report of two wildfires adjacent to Fort Raleigh National Historic Site’s Freedom Trail. Both fires were safely extinguished and pose no risk to public safety. Facilities at Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site and Wright Brothers National Memorial, will close ahead of anticipated impacts from a strong cold front forecast to bring strong winds, coastal flooding and ocean overwash Tuesday, Jan. 9 into Wednesday, Jan 10.  Due to anticipated impacts from severe weather conditions during the overnight hours, visitor facilities will have a delayed 12 p.m. opening Monday, Dec. 18 at Cape Hatteras National Seashore (Seashore), Fort Raleigh National Historic Site and Wright Brothers National Memorial. The Seashore’s Oregon Inlet and Ocracoke campgrounds will open when possible.  National Park Service law enforcement ranger Mike Henry has been named as the new chief ranger at Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site and Wright Brothers National Memorial (Outer Banks Group). Henry’s promotion from the Outer Banks Group’s deputy chief ranger to chief ranger occurred Oct. 22. Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site and Wright Brothers National Memorial are reopening all facilities, except for the Cape Point Campground, at normal times tomorrow, Sept. 24.
