While best known as the site of the "lost colony" in the 1580s as well as the site of a Freedmen's Colony in the 1860s, Fort Raleigh's historical significance continued throughout the 20th Century. From the first voice over radio transmissions by Reginald Fessenden in 1901 and 1902 to the first production of Paul Green's play, The Lost Colony, in 1937, Fort Raleigh continued to make history.
