Lindsay Warren Visitor Center
The visitor center for Fort Raleigh National Historic Site is located at:

1500 Fort Raleigh Road
Manteo, NC 27954

In the visitor center area there is:

  • A paved asphalt parking lot.
  • A visitor drop-off area in the in front of the visitor center,
  • A restroom building to the left of the Visitor Center building.
  • Visitor Center.
  • Shaded, but unpaved picnic area.
  • Access to the Waterside Theater.
  • Access to the Hariot Trail, Freedom Trail, and reconstructed earthwork.
  • Paved paths connecting all of these places.

 

Visitor Center

Information Desk

  • The visitor center is generally very quiet, but visitors can exit outside to find a quieter space if it becomes too loud.
  • Rangers are available to answer questions.
  • Rangers also have handouts about the history, plants, animals, and activities in the park area.
  • Junior Ranger activity booklets are available for anyone at the information desk.

Exhibits

  • There are museum artifacts in plastic cases that tell the history of the area.
  • Several exhibits on the history of the area have touchable parts and models.
  • An short video on the myths of what happened to the colonists plays on-demand in a corner of the exhibit hall.
  • A well-lit exhibit in the center of the visitor center's roomy lobby features touchable elements of the park story.
  • There is a park film shown in the auditorium every half hour that explores the story of the Lost Colony and Raleigh Expeditions. The film is 15 minutes long, is dimly lit, and features loud noises and battle reenactments.
Other Considerations:
  • There is an Outer Banks Forever Store in the visitor center. This area is brightly lit with a large variety of goods for sale and ambient music in the background.
  • The Lost Colony Production in the Waterside Theater uses actors, music and technology to tell the story of Fort Raleigh. Music can be loud, including small pyrotechnics and bright projections. Please contact the Roanoke Island Historical Association for more information.
