Freedmen's Colonists

The Freedmen's Colony, established on Roanoke Island in 1863, brought thousands of freedom-seekers from northeastern North Carolina. The military, administrators, and formerly enslaved people all created a colony meant to bring rights and privileges that had been denied to people under slavery.
