Learning can be fun and interactive! Fort Raleigh National Historic Site offers a variety of educational opportunities, both in person as well as remote. Talk to a ranger, take a virtual tour of our visitor center, or learn at your own pace, our programs can facilitate teaching this mysterious and crucial time in American History. But Fort Raleigh National Historic Site is not just about the mysterious “Lost Colony”. The site covers different varied periods in American history:
- Native Americans- Who have resided on Roanoke Island for thousands of years before the English came in 1584.
- Battle of Roanoke Island- The 1862 Civil War battle, while unknown today, was a key factor in European recognition of the South and African Americans striving for freedom and acceptance. The battle, itself, became the model for combat operations in later island assaults during the next 160 years.
- The Freedmen’s Colony-The Freedmen’s Colony in its attempt to aid pulling African Americans from the turmoil of enslavement, established a goal of advancement through education.
- Fessenden’s Radio Experiment- While here on Roanoke Island Fessenden, a mechanical genius, perfected the technology to transmit voice through the air for miles. The foundations of AM radio and core idea behind nearly all our wireless devices today.
