Geology rocks!

The Rock Cycle and the Geologic Time Scale

These activities cover geologic concepts such as how rocks form over the span of geologic time, which includes major events that have occurred on earth throughout its history.

The concepts from these activities are then applied to the rocks and fossils seen at Florissant Fossil Beds.

Lithic Tools

Native Americans used the natural resources available to them to develop tools. Students will use natural materials to create their own tools in similar ways that Native Americans did and continue to do.

Florissant Club Sandwich

Students will recreate the Florissant Formation stratigraphic column using food materials. Each food item will represent a specific layer of the Florissant Formation.

Florissant Enchiladas

Visualize the order of the different rock layers described by the stratigraphic column of Florissant Fossil Beds and learn how they formed by making delicious enchiladas!

Geologic Timeline

Students will conduct research on extinct species annotating specified information. Students will then locate where on the geologic timeline each species fits. From there, students will create their own geologic timeline trail using their pictures.
