Visitors traveling north/south on I-25: Exit at US 24 West, travel 35 miles to town of Florissant, then follow signs two miles south on Teller County Road 1 to the Visitor Center. Visitors traveling from town of Cripple Creek: Follow Teller County Road 1 north for 16 miles.
Year-round hours 9:00 AM - 4:30 PM.
Please be aware that the Visitor Center parking lot gate will be locked at 4:30 PM each day. Be sure to park at the Hornbek Homestead if you think your hike may run late- this lot is open 24 hours a day.

The Visitor Center is where you should start your visit to Florissant Fossil Beds. At the Visitor Center you can show your pass, if you have one, and/or get passes. There is also a museum full of fossil exhibits, a theater to see the park film, and a bookstore. The Visitor Center also bathrooms and a water fountain and bottle filling station.

The Visitor Center is fully open 9:00 AM - 4:30 PM Wednesday through Sunday. On Monday and Tuesday the visitor center entryway is open providing access to restrooms and visitor information.

There is no public WIFI available within Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument.
Thousands of detailed fossils of insects, like this wasp, have been found in the Florissant fossil beds.

Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument was set aside to protect one of the richest fossil deposits in the world. It was established in 1969.
Location:
35 miles west of Colorado Springs (1 hour drive), near the town of Florissant, CO.
Features:
Massive petrified tree stumps of redwood trees. Several of these are located behind the Visitor Center, and along 1-mile and 1/2-mile self-guided trails.
Detailed fossils of insects, leaves, seeds, fish, and a few mammals and birds. Most are still buried underground, not visible from the trail, as they are easily destroyed by weathering. Excavated specimens are best seen in the Visitor Center exhibits.
Explore the exhibits in the Visitor Center, including a collection of delicate insect, leaf, and fish fossils.
Tour the massive petrified tree stumps in the outdoor exhibit area behind the Visitor Center, and along the 1-mile and 1/2-mile self-guided interpretive trails.

Pets are prohibited in the Visitor Center and on trails. This is for the safety of the wildlife as well as for the safety of your pets.
Pets are allowed in the parking lot and in the designated pet exercise area, by the Visitor Center's picnic area. Pets must be on a leash at all times.
There is very little shade in our parking lot. Please do not leave pets locked in a hot car! It may be best to leave your pet at home if you can, especially on warm days.
