MARTINEZ, CA — Today, the National Park Service (NPS) released the Mt. Wanda Comprehensive Site Management Plan (CSMP) and the associated Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI). The 370-acre planning area at John Muir National Historic Site is an important part of the ranch where John Muir lived. Prior to Muir's time, the site was owned by Ygnacio Martinez as part of the Mexican era Rancho El Pinole, and earlier was home to the Karkin Ohlone Indians. At Mt. Wanda, visitors can walk in John Muir's footsteps as they explore, research, and appreciate the wildness of this inspirational landscape.
The plan will, over time, expand opportunities at Mt. Wanda as it identifies new visitor experiences, addresses facility needs, provides long-term resource management strategies, and recommends improvements for the connectivity of Mt. Wanda to other areas of the park and the broader community. In May of 2023, the National Park Service released the Mt. Wanda Comprehensive Site Management Plan/Environmental Assessment (CSMP/EA). After thorough consideration of the potential for environmental impacts and the comments received, the NPS determined a full environmental impact statement (EIS) was not needed and has released the plan with a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI).
Superintendent K. Lynn Berry notes, “We’re very excited to release the final decision on this plan and are grateful for the engagement and comments we’ve received over the years from the public and our fellow agencies. We look forward to working collaboratively over the next many years to implement the vision laid out in the plan.”
