Accessibility Information

Visitors with Physical/Mobility Needs

  • Restrooms: The John Muir Visitor Center offers accessible restrooms.
  • Pathways: An easy-access paved path provides a less steep route to the Strentzel-Muir house.
  • Transportation: For visitors unable to walk to the house, a ranger can provide transportation via a wheelchair-accessible golf cart.
  • Wheelchair Access: A wheelchair lift allows access to the home's first floor, with a 500-lb combined weight limit for each person and their wheelchair.
    • A non-motorized wheelchair is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
    • Motorized scooters are not permitted in the Strentzel-Muir house or the Martinez Adobe due to uneven surfaces and to protect the integrity of these historic buildings.
    • The first floor of the Martinez Adobe and the Juan Bautista De Anza National Historic Trail exhibit is also accessible from the south side.
  • Picnic Tables: ADA-approved picnic tables are available.
  • Second Floor Access: A video of the second floor of the Muir home can be played by staff upon request in the Muir home dining room.

Information for People Who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing

  • Audio Devices: The park provides audio listening devices and audio description for the park film.
  • Closed Captioning: The main park film in the theater is closed-captioned and can also be watched on the park website before your visit.
  • Sign Language Interpretation: Sign language interpretation for public programs is available upon request. Please contact the park at least two weeks in advance of your visit as there is no sign language interpreter on staff.
  • ASL Video Tour: An ASL video tour of the main grounds is available.

Visitors Who are Blind or Have Low Vision

  • Braille Brochures: The main park brochure is available in braille. Please inquire at the front desk for a copy that can be borrowed.
  • Bronze Model: A bronze cast model of the park, located behind the visitor center, shows the park buildings, elevations, and trails. Please be cautious during high temperatures as the bronze can become too hot to touch.
  • Audio Description: The park film in the John Muir theater is audio-described. Headsets are available upon request.

Visitors with Learning Disabilities

  • Adaptive Tours: All tours are led with the visitor(s) in mind. Park Rangers can adapt to visitor interpretive needs. Contact the park by email or phone to request modifications before your tour, or speak to a ranger once you arrive at the park.

For any specific accessibility needs or questions, please contact the John Muir National Historic Site in advance of your visit. We are committed to providing a rich and inclusive experience for all visitors.
