General Visitation

Most visitors are welcome to explore the site without needing a reservation. However, some activities and groups require prior arrangements.

No Reservation Needed

Most individual visitors can enjoy the site without any prior booking.

Reservations Required

Please make a reservation if you are planning:

  • A visit with a large group
  • A school field trip
  • A special event where reservations are indicated
  • Activities that require permits
  • Occasional Guided Tours of the Muir/Strentzel gravesite.

Large Group or School Group Tours

We’re excited to share the rich history of John Muir and this historic park with your group!

Guided Tours for Large Groups

If your group would like a ranger-guided tour, please schedule your visit at least two weeks in advance. This helps us ensure we are properly staffed to provide a safe and engaging experience for everyone.

Education Programs for Schools

Teachers looking to reserve an education program for their class should contact the Visitor Center directly. Additional details about educational opportunities can be found on the Education page of our website.

Application Requirements

To apply for a Special Use Permit, download the appropriate application forms using the links provided below.

Filming & Photography Permits

If you plan to apply for a permit related to commercial filming or still photography, please review the guidelines before submitting your application to ensure compliance with park regulations.

Outdoor Weddings and Group Picnics

Outdoor weddings and group picnics with 25 people or fewer that take place during normal park hours, without decorations or additional event amenities, do not require a Special Use Permit. If your event meets these criteria, please contact the Office of Special Park Uses with the date, time, and desired location of your event so we can notify on-site staff.

Please note that all picnic areas are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and no activity or event may claim exclusive use of any park area. All park spaces will remain open to the public, and events must not interfere with the public's enjoyment of the area.

General Guidelines for Permitted Events

Event Timing and Capacity
All events on the grounds, including the garden, hillside, and orchard, must conclude by 4:00 PM, with a limit of 70 participants.

Indoor Events
Weddings or other events inside the Muir House are limited to 20 participants, and receptions are not allowed.

Music Restrictions
Unamplified music is permitted, provided it remains reasonable and follows park guidelines. Loudspeakers and bullhorns are prohibited.

Prohibited Materials
The use of rice or birdseed at weddings is not permitted.

Site Access and Restrictions
No area of the site can be reserved exclusively for an event. Trails, steps, entryways, and doorways must remain clear at all times.

Cooking and Fires
Cooking and open flames are not allowed anywhere on-site.

Artifacts and Furnishings
Artifacts or furnishings may not be used or moved under any circumstances.

Clean-Up Responsibilities
Event organizers must ensure that all garbage and litter are removed from the site before leaving.
