HistoryPenelope “Penny” Hartshorne Batcheler was born in 1928 in East Orange, New Jersey. She began her undergraduate studies at Bennington College in Vermont before deciding to pursue a career in architecture. Batcheler transferred to the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago where she studied under the Modernist Master Architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. She was only one of three women enrolled in the school’s undergraduate architectural program and completed her Bachelor’s degree in Architecture in 1953. After graduation, Batcheler spent two years documenting and studying log structures in Sweden.
