Oneida, Tennessee: Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area will be celebrating the participants of the GO BIG 2024 Challenge at the GO BIG Celebration on Saturday, December 7, at 10 AM (ET) at Bandy Creek Visitor Center. Registration begins at 9:30 AM for all challenge participants. Those present will be considered for an award in various categories.

This year’s challenge encompassed categories from each year the GO BIG Challenge has been offered, starting in 2016. A new category, ‘Reflections Along The River’, wrapped up this year’s challenge and encourage participants to engage with the park’s rich history. Visitors were challenged to explore Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area, Obed Wild & Scenic River, and Manhattan Project National Historic Park in Oak Ridge and experience the many different areas of outdoor recreation available in our community.

Participants earned points based on the honor system by answering questions about the nature, and history of the three parks. Points were acquired by embarking on an adventure in search of site-specific information. Points were given for miles hiked, biked, paddled, or equestrian ridden. Visitors were encouraged to collect a total of 100 points to earn a unique GO BIG 2024 Challenge patch. The GO BIG Challenge is a year-long, self-paced, all-inclusive event designed to help all park visitors connect and experience the many diverse activities and areas along with the natural, and cultural resources of Big South Fork NRRA, Obed Wild & Scenic River, and Manhattan Project Historical Park.

Those who attend the Saturday, December 7 celebration will get to see the 2025 GO BIG Challenge patch and get a copy of the 2025 Challenge booklets, which will be available for everyone starting January 1, 2025. New for the 2025 GO BIG Challenge includes a “Lightning Challenge” option. This mini challenge is geared toward explorers on shorter visits, wanting to learn more during the brief time available to them.

The December 7 event will be the final of a series of year-long special events that also celebrates the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area as a unit of the National Park System.
