Homeland Security Division

The Commander, Homeland Security Division, is responsible for all operational activities related to the protection of National Icons. The Division is comprised of the New York Field Office, the Intelligence/Counter-Terrorism Unit, and the Icon Protection Branch which consists of the Central District and Special Forces.

The New York Field Office

The New York Field Office is located within the Gateway National Recreation Area and is headquartered at Fort Wadsworth in Staten Island, New York. The field office is comprised of three District stations--Jamaica Bay/Breezy Point Station (Brooklyn, NY), Staten Island Station/Ft. Wadsworth (Staten Island, NY), and the Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island Station (New York, NY). The New York Field Office is also responsible for the lands and waters of Gateway National Recreation Area in the State of New York (boroughs of Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan).

The Icon Protection Branch

The Central District, Washington, DC, is comprised of the Central District Station, located in East Potomac Park, and the Icon Protection Unit. Officers patrol the monuments and memorials in downtown areas of the District of Columbia and inner city parks such as Dupont Circle and Franklin Park. The Central District Station also provides law enforcement protection to the White House environs.

The Special Forces is responsible for crowd management and mitigation at First Amendment demonstrations, large-scale permitted special events, and other scheduled and unscheduled activities. Special Forces also provide support to the Patrol Branch. The mission of the Special Forces encompasses Presidential security and dignitary escorts, traffic enforcement and management, aerial patrols with search and rescue or recovery missions, medevac services, service of high risk warrants, and expert tactical support. Specialized resources and equipment are coordinated and utilized to assist all Force units with logistical support for law enforcement emergencies that occur throughout the National Park System. Special Forces is comprised of the Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT), the Motorcycle Unit, the Canine Unit, the Aviation Unit, and the Special Events Unit.
