A new National Park Service (NPS) report shows that visitors to national parks in Maine spent $490 million in 2021. The total of 4.1 million visits supported 7,070 jobs and had a cumulative economic output of $770 million. Acadia National Park Superintendent Kevin Schneider announced the selection of Michael Zwelling as site manager of Saint Croix Island International Historic Site in ME. Zwelling is currently the education specialist at Roosevelt-Vanderbilt National Historic Sites in Hyde Park, NY. Zwelling is scheduled to begin work at Saint Croix on Wednesday, September 15. The National Park Service (NPS) is planning to conduct a prescribed fire at Saint Croix Island International Historic Site as potential weather opportunities come available, between April 1 and April 30, 2021, that meet the conditions established in the prescribed fire plan. The prescribed fire could be delayed until the fall if unfavorable conditions persist in April. The National Park Service (NPS) is planning to conduct a prescribed fire at Saint Croix Island International Historic Site as potential weather opportunities come available from October 1 through October 31, 2020, that meet the conditions established in the prescribed fire plan. In October 2019, the National Park Service (NPS) began soliciting proposals to lease the historic McGlashan-Nickerson House located at Saint Croix Island International Historic Site. The lease would last for up to 60 years in exchange for preservation efforts to restore and maintain the house. In support of this effort, the Park Service is hosting an open house on August 6 to allow interested individuals the chance to walk through the entire building, upper and lower barn areas, and grounds. Period architectural features will be pointed out. Questions asked will be recorded and answers shared online for all interested parties. Following guidance from the White House, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and state and local public health authorities, Saint Croix Island International Historic Site (Saint Croix Island IHS) plans to increase recreational access and limited visitor services immediately. Saint Croix Island IHS has reopened access to the interpretive trail, beach area, picnic area, vault toilet, and park rangers providing limited information services to the public at the open-air shelter overlooking the island, and on the visitor center’s porch. Saint Croix Island International Historic Site (Saint Croix Island IHS), in response to guidance from the State of Maine Department of Health and Human Services, is announcing modifications to operations to support federal, state, and local efforts to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). The National Park Service (NPS) is seeking proposals from interested parties to lease the historic McGlashan-Nickerson House within Saint Croix Island International Historic Site. Applicants can submit proposals to the National Park Service Regional Office in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, until Tuesday, December 10, 2019. After taking into account feedback received during the public comment period for the Revised Environmental Assessment/Assessment of Effect for the McGlashan-Nickerson House, the NPS selected the proposed new alternative, “Seek to Preserve McGlashan-Nickerson House through a Lease with the Option to Demolish if Unsuccessful (NPS Preferred Alternative and Proposed Action).” On Friday, August 9, the public is invited to join park rangers at Saint Croix Island International Historic Site for an early “Morning Salute” to honor Passamaquoddy paddlers as they journey past Saint Croix Island on their traditional canoe voyage from Motahkomikuk (Indian Township) to Sipayik (Pleasant Point). After canoes have passed the island, a park ranger will share the story about the important role that the Passamaquoddy played on Saint Croix Island in spring of 1605, and the subsequent Medal of Honor they received from France in 2004 for their efforts.
