CALAIS, ME – In October 2019, the National Park Service (NPS) began soliciting proposals to lease the historic McGlashan-Nickerson House located at Saint Croix Island International Historic Site. The lease would last for up to 60 years in exchange for preservation efforts to restore and maintain the house.
In support of this effort, the Park Service is hosting an open house on August 6 to allow interested individuals the chance to walk through the entire building, upper and lower barn areas, and grounds. Period architectural features will be pointed out. Questions asked will be recorded and answers shared online for all interested parties.
NPS partner, Maine Preservation, is helping spread the word about this unique opportunity. To join the open house on Thursday, August 6, 2020, meet Meg Scheid, Site Manager of Saint Croix Island International Historic Site, at the McGlashan-Nickerson House between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm. The house is located at 76 St. Croix Drive, eight miles south of downtown Calais, ME on Route 1.
“Open House attendees are invited to stick around at 2:00 pm for a brief introduction to the history and significance of the international historic site,” said Scheid, “followed by a short stroll to view Saint Croix Island. It’ll be a nice first step for potential lessees in getting to know the neighborhood.”
Visitors entering Maine from out of state may be subject to a mandatory 14-day quarantine or negative COVID-19 testing alternative. Residents from New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey are exempted from this requirement. Please see https://www.maine.gov/covid19/ for more details.
With public safety in mind, we encourage open house attendees to follow the Governor’s order which requires Maine people to wear cloth face coverings in public places where physical distancing is difficult to maintain, as recommended by the U.S. CDC.
