 Visitors can learn about the original settlement and view Saint Croix Island from this shelter and viewpoint.  The National Park Service will protect coastal archaeological sites, collections, landscapes, and ethnographic resources vulnerable to climate change impacts, particularly sea level rise, flooding, and extreme weather events. Building on 15 years of consultation with Wabanaki Tribes, the project utilizes a 'Two-eyed Seeing' approach, merging Indigenous Knowledge with western science, giving the National Park Service and partners the ability to develop models for preservation  Take a virtual tour of the historic McGlashan-Nickerson House located at 76 St. Croix Drive, Calais, Maine.  The French who arrived at Saint Croix Island in 1604 thought they were prepared for the winter. They had food and shelter, but still almost half of the men died because of their diet. A new National Park Service (NPS) report shows that visitors to national parks in Maine spent $490 million in 2021. The total of 4.1 million visits supported 7,070 jobs and had a cumulative economic output of $770 million.  The legacy of the Saint Croix Island settlement forever influenced the lives of the Wabanaki people, the settlement of North America, and more.  Acadia National Park Superintendent Kevin Schneider announced the selection of Michael Zwelling as site manager of Saint Croix Island International Historic Site in ME. Zwelling is currently the education specialist at Roosevelt-Vanderbilt National Historic Sites in Hyde Park, NY. Zwelling is scheduled to begin work at Saint Croix on Wednesday, September 15.  The Ranger Station at Saint Croix Island IHS features informational exhibits, a park store, passport stamps, a restroom and drinking water during the summer season.  When the men settled on Saint Croix Island, they planned on their seasons being similar to those in France, however, the winter of 1604 was one of the coldest recorded and they were unprepared. Scurvy, which plagued sailors for centuries, took hold on the island settlement.
