What We Inventory

Good stewardship of natural resources in the parks of the Pacific Island Network begins with baseline knowledge of the resources. The National Park Service collected fundamental information on 12 basic inventories, which were defined in Natural Resources Inventory and Monitoring Guidelines (NPS-75). Inventories covered much of the resource information basic to park management needs, including geology, soils, water, vertebrate and vascular plant species, and vegetation.

As we move into the next decade of inventory and monitoring, a planning process is underway for “Inventories 2.0,” which will apply what we’ve learned and move us to the next phase of baseline inventory data needed to manage parks into the future.
