For centuries, Hawaiians travelling by foot relied on carefully planned trails through the lava. One network of ancient and historic trails, extending from southeastern Hawai’i Island along the west coast and ending in the far north, is today's Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail.
This coastal trail corridor traverses some of the most rugged and beautiful landscapes in Hawaiʻi, and passes through four national park units along the way: Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, Pu'uhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park, Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park and Pu'ukoholā National Historic Site.
