On December 4, the National Park Service (NPS) will completely reopen the rehabilitated Arlington Memorial Bridge to drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists. The $227 million rehabilitation project, one of the largest infrastructure projects in NPS history, is a momentous accomplishment for the Department of the Interior and its federal partners that will extend the bridge’s useful life for 75 years.

The National Park Service (NPS) will completely close Arlington Memorial Bridge from 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 30 until 5 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 2. This temporary closure will allow the NPS to move equipment and repair pavement on the south side of the bridge.

The National Park Service (NPS) has postponed the previously announced weekend closure of Arlington Memorial Bridge. The closure is now scheduled to begin at 10 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 15 and will last until 5 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 18. The change will allow the construction contractor to resequence work to prepare for the next phase of construction.

The Arlington Memorial Bridge rehabilitation is moving ahead on schedule. The work about to begin requires the National Park Service to change which travel lanes are open at night. Starting on Monday, March 11 through fall 2019, the National Park Service will reduce the number of lanes from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m.

The National Park Service will close Arlington Memorial Bridge to drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians from 9 p.m. on Friday, December 7, to 5 a.m. on Monday, December 10. We will reschedule the work if there is bad weather.

WASHINGTON— Starting Monday, October 15, the National Park Service (NPS) will begin a new long-term change to the traffic pattern on Arlington Memorial Bridge. This change will reduce the bridge’s capacity from six to three lanes and one sidewalk until the rehabilitation is finished in 2021.

Due to sustained high, fast water in the Potomac River, construction crews were not able to complete all of the work that was originally scheduled for Arlington Memorial Bridge last weekend. Completing the work will require additional temporary, total closures. The closures are schedule to have the smallest possible effect on drivers, pedestrians and cyclists who use the bridge.

Weather permitting, all six lanes and both sidewalks of Arlington Memorial Bridge will be closed from 7 p.m. on Friday, September 28 to 5 a.m. on Monday, October 1. Boaters in the Potomac River should approach the bridge with caution and avoid the area near its center span. Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians will need to use alternative routes to cross the Potomac River.

Starting after Memorial Day, the National Park Service will get Arlington Memorial Bridge ready for a full rehabilitation, which will begin in fall 2018. Work this summer will prepare the bridge to support construction equipment and traffic until its rehabilitation is finished in 2021. The bridge’s current 10 ton load restriction will stay in place for the duration of the project.
