 The National Park Service (NPS) has begun preparing a white-tailed deer management plan for Fort Necessity National Battlefield, Friendship Hill National Historic Site and Flight 93 National Memorial, all in western Pennsylvania. The dramatic increase in white-tailed deer densities over the past century have led to substantial ecological changes and degradation in both the natural and cultural landscapes of western Pennsylvania parks.  Phase one of a multi-year project to revitalize the 40 Memorial Groves and Allée, or walkway, was completed last month. In April, nearly 700 dead or declining trees were removed from the Memorial Groves in preparation for future enhancements. Throughout October, soil remediation and mulching occurred in five groves and nearby sections of the Allée. Trees were also removed from the Allée near the Visitor Center, to allow for soil remediation.  Flight 93 National Memorial will honor the 40 passengers and crew members on the 23rd observance on Wednesday, Sept. 11, with the 30-minute Moment of Remembrance. The 9:45 a.m. ceremony includes the reading of names and a moment of silence.  The National Park Service announces completion of the 911 National Memorial Trail Through Three Western Pennsylvania Park Units with a press conference at Flight 93 National Memorial.  Flight 93 National Memorial has started a ten-year project to revitalize the trees within the 40 Memorial Groves. The National Park Service and the Friends of Flight 93 National Memorial are initiating the first phase of a public-private campaign to restore the living tribute to the Flight 93 crew members and passengers.  Teachers and students across America can virtually join the annual ‘Moment of Remembrance’ from Flight 93 National Memorial. This year the memorial ceremony held in observance of the September 11, 2001 attack will also offer more learning opportunities for classrooms. as part of the “Teach to Remember 9/11” campaign.  The National Park Service and the Friends of Flight 93 National Memorial announce, ‘Teach to Remember,’ a virtual education program, as part of the evolving 9/11 ceremony at Flight 93 National Memorial. Educators can register for the virtual event starting in August 2023. On Monday, September 11, 2023, the park will virtually welcome schools and students from across the United States to join the reading of names and moment of silence.  The National Park Service (NPS) and the Friends of Flight 93 hosted volunteers Thursday and Friday for during National Volunteer Week. Over two days 150 volunteers contributed hundreds of hours to improve the National Memorial and observe Earth Day. National parks are home to many of the nation’s most beloved memorials, historic sites, battlefields, and iconic landscapes.  The National Parks of Western Pennsylvania (WEPA) invite visitors of all ages and members of the media to attend a press conference on Friday, October 28, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. at the Staple Bend Tunnel. The one-hour event will highlight the 33 miles of trails across the five parks: Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site, Johnstown Flood National Memorial, Flight 93 National Memorial, Fort Necessity National Battlefield, and Friendship Hill National Historic Site.
