Special Use Permits

The Special Use Permit authorizes activities that benefit an individual, group, or organization, rather than the public at large, and that require authorization and management control in order to protect park resources and the public interest.

Examples include ceremonies, still photography, or special assemblies which require a special use permit to be acquired in advance.

Permit applications must be filed with the Superintendent at least 10 days before the anticipated activity. Applications are accepted no earlier than one year in advance of the proposed event.

What are permits?

Permits are written authorization to conduct an activity on land administered by the National Park Service with conditions for using the memorial that take into consideration safety, resource protection, and normal park visitation.

Why are permits required?

Permits provides a way to ensure events occur safely, multiple events can be held concurrently, and visitors that come can still enjoy the Memorial. Permitting also allows the National Park Service to accommodate interest in these events while ensuring the grounds and memorial are maintained in a condition that reflects their importance to the nation and does not present future users with a degraded experience. Permitted use of an area is given on a strict first come, first serve basis to ensure a fair application process.

How do I know if I need a permit?

Permits are generally required by regulation for activities that are organized, not considered part of the regular visitation or intended use of a site, or need to be regulated for any number of reasons.
