Gateway Research Learning Center provides a number of resources to assist research endeavors in the Jamaica Bay Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area, which includes areas in Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island.

As the National Recreation Area for one of the most populated and diverse cities in the United States, Gateway NRA offers research opportunities that cannot be found elsewhere. The resources here are vast and varied, from the natural and cultural resources encompassed by the three districts of the Jamaica Bay Unit to the facilities the Institute offers to aid permitted researchers in their work.

Geography & Habitat

Spanning two states, Gateway National Recreation Area is comprised of 13,000+ acres in the boroughs of Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island in New York as well as the beautiful Sandy Hook Unit in New Jersey. These areas form a microcosm of what makes Gateway great: complex natural resources, military history and abundant recreation areas.

Gateway Research Learning Center, housed at historic Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, services the three districts of the Jamaica Bay Unit. Within these three districts lie a number of different habitats; complex dune systems and beach areas of the Breezy Point District, grassland expanses and miles of bay side shoreline of the North Shore District and the upland field and woods and salt marshes of the Wildlife Refuge District.
