The entire southern area of Dead Horse Bay, including Glass Bottle Beach, is closed to the public. Crews are working in these areas using heavy brush clearing equipment and performing radiation surveys. Dead Horse Bay is located in Brooklyn, NYC.

Due to extremely hazardous conditions Gateway National Recreation Area has restricted access to sections of Jacob Riis Park. Erosion has created unsafe conditions from Bays 1-5, and portions of the eastern beach are closed. More
Gateway National Recreation Area is a 27,000 acre park that covers three boroughs in NYC and Sandy Hook, N.J. Parts of Gateway are historic landfills which may be contaminated with hazardous substances that could pose a risk to human health or the environment. The National Park Service (NPS) is currently pursuing cleanup at Dead Horse Bay, Great Kiils Park, and Spring Creek as lead agency under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA).
