Indoor Activities

Indoor areas offer a great way to escape the outdoor weather and to learn more about the park areas. There are vistitor centers in all three units of Gateway that feature hands-on exhibits, bookstores, and rangers or volunteers available to answer questions. Click on each location below to learn about the facilities in each area.
The Fort Wadsworth and Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge Visitor Centers are open Friday- Monday from 10 am to 4 pm.
The Sandy Hook Visitor Center is open on Saturday-Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm.
The Ryan Visitor Center is open on Saturday and Sunday from 9 am to 12 pm.
The Sandy Hook lighthouse is open for tours on Saturday and Sunday from 1 pm to 3:30 pm.


Masks are optional in all federal buildings throughout Gateway National Recreation Area.

 
  • Ryan Visitor Center at Gateway's Floyd Bennett Field
    Floyd Bennett Field

    Floyd Bennett Field was NYC's first municipal airport. Today this area includes over 1,300 acres of grassland and the Ryan Visitor Center.

    Fort Wadsworth

    Fort Wadsworth was one of the oldest military installations in the country before becoming part of Gateway National Recreation Area.

  • Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center
    Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge

    The Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge includes over 12,600 acres. More than 300 different bird species have been spotted here.

  • Sandy Hook Lighthouse
    Sandy Hook

    Sandy Hook includes the oldest continuously operating lighthouse in the U.S, a Nike missile site, and many historic buildings.
