First Lady Melania Trump planted a pin oak tree on the lower east side of the South Grounds center panel on August 27, 2018. The First Lady was helped by Richard Emory Gatchell, Jr., a fifth-generation grandson to President James Monroe (1817-1825) and Mary Jean Eisenhower, granddaughter of President Dwight D. Eisenhower (1953-1961). This pin oak tree commemorates all presidential families and their contributions to the United States.
