In January 1969, President Lyndon Johnson and First Lady Claudia “Lady Bird” Johnson created the Children’s Garden. The garden layout was designed by noted architecture Edward Durrell Stone and scaled in size for young children. The young grandchildren of the President are commemorated with bronze castings of their young handprints and/or some footprints, and in some cases both. The garden was last renovated in 2019. Today there are over 30 castings commemorating presidential grandchildren in the garden.
