The struggle for civil rights in the United States includes both achieving and maintaining those liberties. While civil rights history is often associated with the protests of the 1950s and 1960s, different groups and communities have fought for rights throughout our country’s history. The places where people gathered, protested, and marched serve as reminders of the obstacles overcome.

The National Park Service preserves and protects some of the places associated with civil rights history. Explore the Visit section of this itinerary to discover those parks and historic sites dedicated to telling the stories of civil rights. You’ll also find places that been listed in the National Register and designated as National Historic Landmarks.
