We Shall Overcome

The original We Shall Overcome travel itinerary was created in 1998. While it by no means included all of the sites associated with civil rights, it presented a range of churches, private residences, and public sites of protest that spoke to the history of the African American Civil Rights Movement. The We Shall Overcome travel itinerary was chosen for inclusion in the African American Civil Rights Network in October 2019. This section of the updated website presents a snapshot of the original itinerary – before many more sites were added to the National Register.

  Elizabeth Harden Gilmore House

  Gilmore lived and worked in this house from 1947 until her death in 1986.

  Malcolm X House Site (NE)

  This historical marker commemorates Malcolm X. His childhood home, now demolished, once stood on this site.

  Juanita J. Craft House (TX)

  Craft lived in this one-story wood frame house for 50 years, and both Lyndon Johnson and Martin Luther King, Jr., visited her here.
