History

Old, weathered, stone building consisting of two fortress-like towers and a crumbling rock wall, which is surrounded by a grass lawn with palm trees.
Mission Concepción, located on El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail, was completed in 1755. Located near downtown San Antonio, it was one of more than 40 Texas missions that the Spanish built between the 1680s and the 1790s.

What We Do

The history team works with partner associations and other organizations to

  • Encourage historical research and writing to better preserve, protect, and interpret the nine national historic trails and one historic road administered by the National Trails office.

  • Disseminate research and historic site information

  • Ensure that interpretive materials are historically accurate and reflect office goals

  • Engage in community outreach activities to underserved Hispanic and other traditional communities

Technical Assistance

  • Care and support of trail research

  • Development of research plans for each trail, in conjunction with the trail associations

  • Assistance with development of management plans, museum exhibits, interpretive waysides, trail brochures, and similar products developed through this office
