Planning is the process of developing a structured approach to meet your preservation and education goals. The National Trails office has the staff expertise to help you identify your planning needs to make your vision for the trails come alive in a responsible and sustainable way.

We collaborate with many trail partners for these activities. Planning helps the National Trails office meet its mandate by Congress to commemorate historic routes and promotes their preservation and development for public use.

NPS is conducting a study to evaluate the feasibility and suitability of designating the Pike Trail as a new National Historic Trail. We invite you to learn about and participate in the study process. The route under study affects areas and interests in present-day Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, and Louisiana, as well as Mexico.
