Their work included corrosion rack deployment, collecting surface oil samples, and project imaging and documentation - all in an effort to better understand the rate of corrosion of the USS Arizona and to learn more about the oil that is still leaking from the ship. The team included Chris Reddy, senior scientist for the department of marine chemistry and geochemistry at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, and metallurgist Don Johnson. The program augments NPS underwater archaeologists and photographers with disabled veterans trained in scientific diving to assist the NPS National Dive Program with its ongoing management responsibilities for this American icon. US Army veteran David Ortiz, a T-10 complete paraplegic from a helicopter crash in Afghanistan, participated in this dive at the USS Arizona. Photo Gallery Celebrating the Navy's 242nd B...8 Images Navy Region Hawaii hosted a bell ringing ceremony at the Pearl Harbor Visitor Center to celebrate the US Navy's 242nd birthday on October 13, 2017. The USS Arizona bell was rung nine times to mark the changing of the watch and the beginning of the Navy’s 242nd year. Following the bell ringing was the dedication of the new Lone Sailor statue on the visitor center grounds. The Lone Sailor represents the US Navy Memorial’s mission to honor, recognize and celebrate the men and women of the sea services. Photo Gallery Interment of USS Arizona Survi...9 Images On April 15, 2017, Raymond Haerry, one of the last remaining USS Arizona survivors, was returned to his ship during a sunset memorial and interment ceremony. His granddaughter, Ms. Jessica Marino, and her immediate family were present. The ceremony was hosted by the National Park Service and Navy Region Hawaii. Haerry served in WWII and the Korean War. After the war, he taught at the officer candidate school in Newport, R.I., until his retirement in 1964 as a master chief petty officer. Master Chief Haerry passed away on Sept. 27, 2016 in Rhode Island. He was 94. Five USS Arizona survivors remain. Photos by Elaine Simon, Pacific Historic Parks. They later spoke at Kilo Pier on Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. Abe is the first Japanese prime minister to visit the USS Arizona Memorial.
