Students recognize shapes in Mount Rushmore, whether it’s 2D shapes through a series of 2D drawings, or 3D shapes through measurable PDF’s of the 3D model of Mount Rushmore. Learners use geometric formulas to calculate the volumes of these shapes based on scaled representations and effectively use understanding of scale to translate these calculations to life-size.

Students will research information to find information about the number of wounded from both patriot and British forces from the SC revolutionary battles: Battle of Camden, Battle of Waxhaws, Kings Mountain, and Cowpens. They will then create a graph that compares the number both injured and fatally wounded.

Working in small groups, students examine the feeding habits of bears and draw pictures to show what bears do in spring, summer, fall, and winter. Students use a small pattern of a grizzly bear and increase its scale to construct a full-size silhouette of a grizzly in order to appreciate the bear’s size.

This lesson plan will allow students to have an interactive experience with the history of Mount Rushmore without being physically present at the memorial. With historical images, newspaper articles, letters, telegrams and maps, students will dive into the history of Mount Rushmore, explore the motivating factors for creating a large-scale sculpture in the Black Hills, and consider how choices of South Dakotans in the past continue to impact the lives of South Dakotans today.

As you approach the Statue of Liberty in beautiful New York Harbor, think about how the statue is viewed today compared to 100 years ago. Think about all the different ways and places that you have seen the Statue of Liberty displayed. How is she percieved? What symbols make up her design and how does that affect how she is viewed? Another line of questioning could be a consideration of the statue’s enormous scale.
