The area known today as the Grand Canyon has been home to people for over 13,000 years, with 11 contemporary tribes having links to the area. Many individuals in these tribes have inspired their own communities, and the country, with their traditional art. Some tribal members have bestowed historic structures around the canyon with their artwork, while others have utilized art as one of many tools towards activism and uplifting their communities.

The often dramatic and voluminous eruptions that occur on Kīlauea volcano can wipe out forest far from the actual eruption site. Using this field trip guide, students examine the aftermath of one such eruption on location; using scientific practice and historical evidence to understand the changes caused by the eruption, and how the land in the area is still changing today.

Students will have the opportunity to study and identify fish as really wildlife biologists. They will watch clips taken of salmon swimming up stream through the Silver Salmon Weir in Lake Clark National Park. Their job will be to use their identification cards and see how many salmon they can identify as they swim past. Be careful -- some salmon look awfully similar!

Canyon Connections program explores the relationship between living (biotic) and nonliving (abiotic) in three Grand Canyon ecosystems. Participants will be asked to make observations as they investigate interactions between living and non-living and understand how these interactions shape adaptations for survival. Program is given by Grand Canyon Park Rangers via Distance Learning and is intended for 5th through 8th grade.
