Learn about the Great Depression, Frances Perkins, and the development of the CCC

Learn about the CCC at the Grand Canyon and Segregation across the CCC

Explore the day to day of a CCC member at Grand Canyon and research similar projects today

Lesson Hook/Preview

Have students read the article Race Relations in the 1930s and 1940s. Have students read this page on Frances Perkins.  

Procedure

Engage:  

Have students discuss the background knowledge they have about being Black in America in the 1930s and 1940s. What impacts do they think this had on the New Deal and the CCC at Grand Canyon?  

Explore and Explain:  

Have students read this article on the CCC at Grand Canyon and this article on Company 818 and the CCC at Grand Canyon.  

Elaborate: 

Have students write a short story, comic strip, itinerary, or some other creative process for a day in the life of John Scott in camp 818 as trail crew leader and photographer before 1936.  

Have students research the Student Conservation Corps and the kinds of projects they might be interested in or programs in their area.
