Junior Rangers care about our national parks. Their mission is to explore, learn, and protect our nation's parks for future generations, and have fun while doing it!

What is a Junior Ranger?

Junior Rangers help to preserve Steamtown National Historic Site (and other National Parks) by: exploring the parks they visit, learning fun facts along the way, and taking an oath to protect the parks for future generations. Junior Rangers serve as ambassadors to the National Parks by sharing what they learn with their friends, families, and classmates.

How can you become a Junior Ranger?

To become a Junior Ranger at Steamtown National Historic Site, stop by the information kiosk and ask for your free book. Note: Due to COVID-19, and for everyone's safety, all Junior Ranger books (and badges) will be provided in a small bag. Once you have completed the activities you can either bring it back to the kiosk or find a Park Ranger to check your work!

Activities in the books range from word searches to archeological digs to interacting with our exhibits! Can't wait to get back to the park and start the program? Send us an email with the books you would like and we can mail them to you.

Junior Ranger Railroad Explorer

Did you know that before the transcontinental railroad, it took four to six months to cross the United States? This is just one of the many fun facts you can learn as you become a Railroad Explorer!

Steamtown National Historic Site is one of the few parks to carry this special Junior Ranger activity book. If you are visiting Steamtown, you can ask a ranger at the information kiosk for your copy of the book. Unable to visit us in person? Not to worry!
