Steamtown National Historic Site

Planning a visit to a National Park can generate many questions: What's open? What can I do there? Is my dog allowed? While we do our best to provide the answers to these questions in the information on the website, we recognize it may not always be easy to find or a simple answer. Below are answers to some of the more frequently asked questions we get here at Steamtown.

How do I get there?

The park entrance is at the intersection of Cliff Street and Lackawanna Avenue in downtown Scranton. The physical address is:

NOTE: drivers of campers and RVs should be aware that the bridge clearance near the park entrance is 13 feet, 7 inches.

General Driving Directions:

• Take I-81 to exit 185.
• Continue onto Central Scranton Expressway and follow signs to Mifflin Ave.
• Turn left onto Mifflin Ave.
• Turn right onto Lackawanna Ave.

• Turn left onto Cliff St (Park entrance).

What are your hours?

We are open daily from 9:00am to 5:00pm (Winter Hours: 10:00am to 4:00pm). The park is closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Occasionally, the park may close due to inclement weather; these notices will be posted on our Alerts page.

Do you issue National Park passes?

No. Effective January 2022, we no longer issue any of the America the Beautiful - National Parks & Federal Recreational Lands Passes.

Are the trains climate controlled?

No.  Our trains are antiques and are not equipped with heat or air conditioning. In summer months, weather permitting, windows may be opened to help increase air flow. Please be sure to dress accordingly.

Do you have a gift shop?

Yes.  The Museum Shop and Park Store at Steamtown is operated by America's National Parks which supports the ongoing preservation and interpretation efforts at the park.

Is food available at the park?

Snacks, cold soft drinks and water (no hot beverages) are available for purchase at Steatown's Museum Shop and Park Store during regular operating hours; there are no restaurants, snack or coffee bars at Steamtown. However, there are cafes, restaurants, and grocery stores available throughout Scranton.

Picnic tables are available seasonally, but remember that food, snacks and beverages are not allowed inside any park buildings. Please remember to "pack it in, pack it out" and pack out all trash, leftover food and litter.

Is the Trolley Museum part of your complex?

While we share an entrance and parking lot, the Trolley Museum is run by Lackawanna County.  You can learn more about the Trolley Museum and other sites on our Nearby Attractions page.

Do I need a permit to take photos in the park?

Still photographers require a permit only when:
1) the activity takes place at a location(s) where or when members of the public are not allowed; or
2) the activity uses model(s), sets(s), or prop(s) that are not a part of the location's natural or cultural resources or administrative facilities; or
3) a park would incur additional administrative costs to monitor the activity.
