Frequently Asked Questions

1. Where can we see the sea turtles?

Sea turtles can often be seen basking at Keone'ele Cove or swimming just offshore. Remember if you see a sea turtle, they are protected by federal laws and that you should remain at least 20' away from them.

2. Where is the snorkeling?

The snorkeling area is located outside of the park in Honaunau Bay, adjacent to the boat ramp. Due to the the cultural and religious importance of the area and the number of threatened sea turtles that use the area, snorkeling is highly discouraged within the park.

3. Where can we eat?

There is no food for sale inside the park. The nearest restaurants are located at least 3 miles from the park along Highway 11.

4. What is the that pale yellow fruit?

The noni is a medicinal plant that was brought to Hawai'i by the early Polynesian settlers. The fruit was used as a medicinal tonic. It could be eaten in times of famine, but was not considered very tasty.

5. Is there a place to picnic?

The park has a recreation area that includes picnic tables and B-B-Q facilities at the back of the park. This is a great place to enjoy the ocean and the sunset. The park gates close at sunset daily. Please be prepared to leave the picnic area and the park at sunset.
