    As part of his plan to reach Washington DC, General Robert Lee and the Confederate armies had engaged in various assaults with Union Troops in prior days with neither side gaining a decisive advantage over the other. On July 3, 1863, the third day of the Battle of Gettysburg, Union troops repelled a massive artillery assault on Cemetery Ridge in southern Pennsylvania.

    Congratulations to the Town of Ashland on their two Battlefield Land Acquisition grants. More than 300 acres will be added to the Newtown Battlefield State Park.

    Facts and figures for 2023

    Battlefield Land Acquisition Grants (BLAG) empower preservation partners nationwide to acquire and preserve battlefield lands. Last year ABPP awarded 31 BLAGs, totaling $18.7 million to assist with the non-Federal acquisition and protection of 1,417 acres of battlefield lands. These acres spanned across 9 different states, including Georgia, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.

    The Union army’s eventual capture of the Confederate Capital (Richmond) was the greatest signal to the end of the civil war but was precipitated by the Siege of Petersburg.

    Advance to Break the Deadlock at Gettysburg Battlefield

    The 1st U.S. Cavalry and the 6th Pennsylvania Cavalry regiments of the Union army were here.

    In an attempt to win, a tactical mistake proved costly for the Confederate army as the casualties rippled through the army signaling the end to a three -day battle and the shifting tide of the war.
