Stuart Hay FieldGrant-Kohrs Ranch has four very distinct seasons that ranchers have needed to work with since Johnny Grant began raising cattle here in the 1850s. The changes that occur through the seasons can give us a fascinating view into the ecological systems at work during different times of year. This is a unique location that is cultivated. Watch as winter snow melts away, the irrigated hay grasses grow tall and mature, then are harvested and stacked to be fed through the winter.Clark Fork RiverYou might wonder why there are no willows visible on the riverbank and bare soil showing. This is an opportunity to see how an area grows back after an environmental cleanup. Work was completed in this area in 2020 as part of a large EPA Superfund cleanup site. The soil that had been contaminated by mining activity upstream was removed, clean soil brought in and the area replanted. Watch as this ecosystem heals and comes back to life. ![]() NPS Photo/ Julie Croglio |
