HARPER’S FERRY, IA -- Effigy Mounds National Monument invites children of all ages to participate in Park Explorer Junior Ranger Day: "Pack Like a Ranger" on Saturday, July 27, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Plan a visit to a national park just like a ranger and go home with a new badge! This event celebrates the spirit of adventure and teaches essential skills for packing on wildlife explorations. Park visitors will have the opportunity to learn from wildlife experts, tent-camping specialists, and water exploration enthusiasts who will share their best practices and tips for outdoor adventures. Whether preparing for a hike through scenic trails or a night under the stars, attendees will gain valuable insights into packing essentials and safety measures.

AUGUST 6 – Cross Quarter Day Dawn Hike on August 6 th starting at 5:00 AM. Meet at the visitor’s center parking lot and hike up to fire point with a ranger to view the sunrise! On the cross-quarter day between the summer solstice and the fall equinox, the sun rises in alignment with the mound alignment at Fire Point. Be prepared for a 350-foot climb, an amazing view from the bluffs, and 2-mile round trip!
AUGUST 25 -- National Park Service Birthday, August 25th 1:00 PM - 4:30 PM. Come celebrate our 108th birthday! We will have birthday cake and children can do the activities for the Centennial junior ranger book and earn a 2016 Centennial pin.
Effigy Mounds National Monument preserves prehistoric American Indian burial and ceremonial mounds, including some in the shape of animals. The monument's main entrance is located three miles north of Marquette, Iowa, and 22 miles south of Waukon, Iowa, on HWY 76. Visitor Center hours are 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but trails are open from dawn until dusk.
