Reservations

Reservations are not required to enter Whiskeytown National Recreation Area, but are required for camping. You can pay the park entrance fee upon arrival at the visitor center (open year-round except on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Day), or online through Recreation.gov.

Oak Bottom camping reservations can be made by calling 1-530-359-2269.

Primitive camping at Whiskeytown National Recreation Area campsites can be made through
recreation.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777.

$1 summer ranger-led kayak and paddleboard program reservations can be made through recreation.gov or by calling 1-877-444-6777.

Special Park Use Permits

What types of activities require a special park use permit?

  • Special Events: Weddings, memorial services, sporting events and gatherings of 25 people or more, etc., require of permit. More
  • First Amendment Activities: Religious services, distribution and/or sales of printed matter, political speeches, demonstrations and collection of signatures for a petition, etc., require a permit. More

Commerical Use Authorizations

Guided fishing trips, watercraft rentals, scuba diving classes, photography workshops, etc., require a permit. More

Backcountry Camping

Visitors backpacking overnight at Whiskeytown National Recreation Area must obtain a free Backcountry Camping Permit at the Visitor Center. Read the backcountry camping rules and regualtions before your trip.

Filming

The following types of filming activities may occur in areas open to the public without a permit and without advance notice to the National Park Service:

  • Outdoor filming activities involving five persons or less and equipment that will be carried at all times, except for small tripods used to hold cameras.

Other types of filming activity must provide written notice. More

Commerical Photography

Commercial Still photography does not require a permit unless it uses a model, set, or prop. The following types of filming activities may occur in areas open to the public without a permit and without advance notice to the National Park Service:

  • Outdoor filming activities involving five persons or less and equipment that will be carried at all times, except for small tripods used to hold cameras.

Scientific Research Permits

All studies in Whiskeytown NRA, large or small, must have their own Research & Collecting Permit which is obtained through a proposal and review process that requires approximately 90 days. More...
