Whiskeytown National Recreation Area will soon begin pile burning to remove hazardous fuels within the park boundary. This work will begin as early as December 15th and could last through the winter and spring seasons, depending on weather and fuels conditions as well as site conditions. Areas of the park that will have pile burning are numerous and include Oak Bottom, Carr Powerhouse, East Beach, Whiskey Creek, Brandy Creek, South Shore Drive, Peltier Valley Road, Paige Bar Road, and the Tower House Historic District. The total pile burning project area encompasses 346 acres.

Pile burning is one of several types of fuels reduction strategies that the National Park Service performs in order to help protect against catastrophic wildland fire. Locations for various fuels treatments are selected based on several factors including weather conditions, types of fuel, safety, and available personnel.
