Students utilize resources available in the art classroom to recreate the Mount Rushmore Sculpture, or design their own version, where they choose the four figures from history they feel should be represented by the monumental sculpture. Students will present their final art piece to the classroom with a persuasive argument for their choices of the figures.

Students calculate an estimate the weight of Mount Rushmore by calculating the volume using cross sections of the model, then use density of stone to finally arrive at a rough estimate of the weight. Finally, students calculate when two cracks on the surface of the sculpture would intersect over time.

This lesson plan will allow students to have an interactive experience with the history of Mount Rushmore without being physically present at the memorial. With historical images, newspaper articles, letters, telegrams and maps, students will dive into the history of Mount Rushmore, explore the motivating factors for creating a large-scale sculpture in the Black Hills, and consider how choices of South Dakotans in the past continue to impact the lives of South Dakotans today.

They will then create a graph that compares the number both injured and fatally wounded.

Glacier’s mountainous landscape tells the tale of the powerful geologic forces that have shaped the land over time. In this program, students will investigate the many geologic forces that have sculpted the mountains of Glacier by learning about the four main stages of the park’s geologic formations; silt, tilt, slide, and glide. Through hands-on activities and discussion, students will become immersed in the geologic story of Glacier National Park.
