Prairie Animals and Habitats

Badlands National Park protects 244,000 acres of mixed-grass prairie habitat and the wild animals that live in it. Prairie vegetation is mostly grasses--find out why. Then take a look at some of the wildlife (including bison, pronghorn, prairie dogs, and black-footed ferrets) that have adaptations that allow them to thrive in the prairie environment. Students participating in the in-class program may see and touch animal pelts, complete a puzzle, or complete a craft.
Fabulous Fjord Ecosystem

Fjord estuary ecosystems only exists in 6 places around the world! Students will explore this unique environment, observe the plants and animals that thrive here and consider the interconnected systems that maintain its delicate balance. This program discusses the transfer of energy within food webs and changes in community/population dynamics. Students will have the opportunity to dive into humans’ role in this ecosystem and their local ecosystems.

"Alligator Hole Eco-Drama" Wildlife: 4-6th Grade

Our "Wildlife" unit is broken into 16 lesson plans, each taking from 20 minutes to several class periods to complete, and targeted mainly at 4th-6th grade students. A class needn't complete every lesson in the unit, though some lessons do refer to one another and are better done in sequence. However, each lesson comes with its own set of objectives and resources.

Prepare students for a visit to the 81-acre tallgrass prairie at Herbert Hoover National Historic Site. Activities strenghten skills in observation, analysis, and interpretation in the field and in the classroom.
